The open camping area on the shores of Lake Rotokare is pretty nice. After pitching our tent near the lake we took the hike around the lake to see what we could find. The trail around the lake is about 4 kms, and takes about 1 and a half hours. During our walk we saw heaps of birds, including a lot of hihi or stitchbirds.

There's 2 walks around the lake, where you may even spot a kiwi (make sure you walk at night and take a red torch to see them!) The camping spot is quite exposed so take some warm clothes! Rotokare Scenic Reserve is open all day, every day to the public.
